Blast from the Past

I was recently at my parents house and my mom had found old boxes of my stuff. Among the boxes was a crochet project I started when I was around 11. I plan on finishing it, I'm just not sure how to do it yet. It is supposed to be a blanket. When you are 11, a blanket doesn't need to be that wide. This blanket covers my shins and feet, if I never move. I have more of the yarn I used so I think I might just crochet another piece and seam them together (I don't think anyone will notice because the blanket is already pretty...well, lets just say you can tell an 11 year old made it). Nerdy side point: I remember working on this project while roller blading. Yes, while roller blading. I had the yarn in a backpack and rode around the neighborhood while crocheting. If I saw someone doing that now I would think, "What the hell is wrong with that person? That isn't safe. Who rolls around the neighborhood while roller blading? What a freak." and on, and on. But hey, that's just what kind of person I was while in grade school. I was cool like that.

i totally have a blanket that i started crocheting at probably about that same age... it's acrylic and, well, really ugly. it's one big ass granny square. i started ripping it out, but then i stopped because what on earth would i use that yarn for anyway??

but, yes, i did really knit the HP scarf at the movie. since it's all knit stitch, it was easy enough to do even when i was totally engrossed in what was happening on the screen... although i'll admit that i probably paused a great deal when things got good :-)

Hi, Amanda!

I've been knitting for about 3 years, now (I had my mom teach me). I don't think I hit the level of massive obsession until last fall, though.

Don't worry about making garments! While it's definitely more complicated than knitting a scarf, I find them easier to make than scarves (scarves can get a little tedious). If you can make socks and Pasha (which is so cute! I've been wanting to make Sheldon, the turtle, for awhile) you can definitely make a garment. If you worry about making something only to have it not fit properly, I'd go with some sort of top-down raglan pattern first, since you can try those on as soon as you've separated the sleeves from the body of the garment, and tweak the fit as you go.

As for Knucks, I can vouch for the pattern. And they look great without the embroidery (I found it rather ugly, too, and didn't bother with it). If you make them, and make the ribbed cuff, I'd recommend going down a needle size or two when you knit the cuff (so the knit stitches in the ribbing will be the same size as the stitches in the body of the glove). I didn't for my pair, and the cuffs are kind of loose...I like the cuff on Mat's pair better (where I went down a couple sizes).

I told Mat he wasn't getting a sweater from me until after I've moved to Chicago! I've been telling him about the sweater curse, but I don't think he buys it...

Love the colour of the blanket...what a good choice for an 11 year old. If that were me it probably would've been orange or purple squares...
